To benefit from longer active LEI periods, we recommend that you select the multi-year option. We automate the annual renewal process if you choose 2-5 year LEIs, eliminating the risk of LEIs expiring. The automated verification process ensures that legal entity data is up to date and meets GLEIF criteria every year, without the LEI holder needing to participate in the process. Compared to buying one year at a time, multi-year LEIs offer significant savings.

What makes an LEI number different from an LEI code?
Think of an LEI number as an international business registration number. Globally, the LEI number is used to identify participants in financial transactions.
There is a price for requesting an LEI code, as well as an annual maintenance fee to keep the code valid. An LEI number is required for all legal entities including companies, funds and charities.
Who has the authority to issue an LEI number?
GLEIF, a non-profit organization responsible for maintaining the integrity of the global LEI system, is responsible for coordinating the issuance of LEI numbers. The LEI number is physically issued by local operational units authorized by GLEIF.
All LEI numbers and reference data will be published in GLEIF’s LEI database, which is open to the public. The LEI Regulatory Oversight Committee, which is made up of various global financial institutions, oversees GLEIF. A free legal entity identifier search is available through GLEIF. The legal entity identification search will reveal whether the LEI is active or not, as well as when it will expire.
Who needs an LEI number?
As of January 3, 2018, all EU legal entities subject to MiFID II are required to trade with a valid LEI (e.g. bonds, stocks, futures, etc.). Many countries outside the EU accepted the ideas, including the United States, which did so through the Commodity Exchange Act. In addition, companies subject to the MiFID II transaction reporting requirement cannot accept transactions initiated by customers who do not have a valid LEI number.
